Sports Representation Scenario 6
“Out of Pocket””
Sports Professional Given Bad Advice, Poor Representation & a Lack of Support
As a 22 year old professional Rugby Union player, Christian has had a meteoric rise, making his international debut at 19. He has totally trusted his agent, a friend of his father at the local Rugby Club and former International Rugby player to manage his concerns, however it becomes apparent to Christian and his family something isn’t right in regards to his salary and also his commercial income.
In the first month of each year he receives no salary as part of his playing contract and he queries this with his club. On closer inspection, this is because in his representation contract his agent is paid in the first month of the year rather than monthly instalments. After much deliberation and after his current agency representation contract expires, Christian decides to speak with ‘Chiron’, on the advice of his current club’s Chief Executive.
It transpires that the previous agent has not acted in Christian’s best interests on his player contract but also mismanaged his other financial and investment concerns with poor pension and investment advice, sub-standard insurance cover and also unnecessary outlay – probably caused by the agent concentrating on material back-handers and financial introduction fees to sub-standard providers.
‘Chiron’ and their trusted team evaluate all the elements and rectify what they can, allowing Christian to concentrate on being a star of the Rugby field.
